Supporting the transition to high school blog series: What to expect in High School

Changes from HIGH SCHOOL

High school is larger, with more buildings, people and space. This can make our sensory systems feel overwhelmed at times, but it also means more opportunities and resources.

You'll have different teachers for each subject. It might take time to learn their names and teaching styles, but they are always there to help.

Teachers in high school tend to have higher expectations and give you more responsibility and independence. This is an exciting part of growing older, but it can be tricky to adjust to at first.

Exciting things about high school

There are new subjects and opportunities to explore your interests! This includes music, drama, sports and technology. More independence and responsibility. You get to learn about yourself more and develop new skills You will get to meet new peers and create new friendships.

You'll move to different rooms for each subject. This new layout is very different from primary school and might take some time to remember where all your classes are.

You'll need to organise yourself and your belongings more than in primary school. You will have your own locker and different books for different classes. Trying new strategies can help manage this increased responsibility.

There will likely be more work, and it might be more challenging. Learning to balance school work with other activities is important for our wellbeing.

Some of your friends might not go to the same high school, which can be scary. However, you'll have the chance to meet many new people and make new friends. It's completely normal to feel nervous about this.
