ABAS 3 Participant X Case Study

Assessment Objective: Has an overview of what Adaptive behaviour is (which is what we are measuring) rather than ‘independent living skills’. Please review this if your unsure what Adaptive Behaviour is. The context of this is very different. Basically, it is how you learn a skill and apply this knowledge to other skills.

General Background/information: Pre-written information to fill out for client. This will save time.

Assessment Rationale: The expectation here is to clearly justify and to utilise your clinical reasoning as to why this assessment was completed.

Assessment: The definition has changed dramatically, as well as the scoring guide. This is really important to understand prior to completing the assessment. In the ABAS, we asses 2X key factors – a persons ability to display a behaviour, and the frequency of continued display of the behaviour. It is really important this is understood prior to implementation.

Score Summary: This is for families to understand the percentiles and qualitive descriptions.

Results/Comments: Underneath the score table, can all staff please review in depth: the GAC score/its meaning, the confidence interval, percentile rank, population used, strength areas and ongoing areas for development. We also want to ensure this section details the level of support provided by the informal support network clearly here.

Score Profile***: Attach an image of the score table the Ax provides (i.e., the Bell Curve graph). ***Please note***, if you use the Paper version, please delete this whole section.

Assessed Adaptive Skill Area/Domain Analysis: All overviews have been pre-filled for therapists. Your time will now go into the rater comment review. Use the scoring throughout the Ax to support this. This is to detail clearly what the adaptive behaviour limitations are in the quadrant. Please do not delete or skip this part as this is the analysis and what participants are essentially paying for when completing this assessment.

Outcome and Recommendations Is now split into 2X sections:

NDIS recommendations : i.e., core and capacity building recommendations for the NDIS

Informal support recommendations: Informal support strategies to build within the home or with SW. Make these clear and personable, doing a good rater comment analysis will make this section very straight forward. I would advise to use the book as a guide only, and to use the rater comments section as your clinical reasoning.

Appendix: The scoring tables are now at the bottom of the Ax, so the important information is up the top. Please complete this table as usual for all domains. Raw totals are provided. Add up and put the guessed number in if required. All pronouns have been removed from this section.
