Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment
FAQ’s
-
Why do I need my doctor to complete a medical report before my driving assessment?
VicRoads have a medical review team who ensure that every licensed driver meets the national Assessing Fitness to Drive (AFTD) guidelines. A medical report is required so that the medical review team ensure that you meet these guidelines before you complete your on-road driving assessment. This is compulsory for an occupational therapist to complete the driving assessment.
-
Can I practice beforehand?
Yes, if it is safe and you are legally allowed to drive. Some people may choose to have refresher lessons with a driving instructor before the assessment.
-
What are the possible outcomes?
Based on the outcome of your assessment Vic Roads may decide the following:
- No change – you keep your driver’s license and continue driving.
- Conditions for driving – You keep your driver’s license however you may have conditions placed on your driving. For example; you may only be allowed to drive during daylight hours, or only around your neighbourhood.
- Suspension/cancellation: your license is suspended or cancelled as you have either; are not considered medically fit to drive, refuse to complete the assessment, or you demonstrate unsafe driving during the assessment.
-
Can I choose the route for my driving assessment?
VicRoads requires the driving assessment to include certain tasks which increase in complexity throughout the assessment, therefore the occupational therapist has a planned route prior to your appointment.
If you require the route to be located nearby your home so it is familiar, or cannot safely complete the route designed by the occupational therapist, this may result in a condition on your license to keep yourself and others safe.
-
Does Vic Roads have to be notified about the outcome of my assessment?
Yes, it is a requirement that the outcome of the assessment is shared with Vic Roads. The occupational therapist provides outcomes and recommendations to Vic Roads, however Vic Roads make the final decisions regarding the status of your license.
-
How often will I need to be reassessed?
This depends on the driver’s circumstances, the outcome of the driving assessment, and the medical review team’s recommendations.
-
If I want to obtain my probationary license will I need to do both an occupational therapy driving assessment and a Vic Roads license test?
