Supporting the transition to high school blog series: Being Ready For Big Changes

Locker Management

Combination Lock Over Key Lock: Consider using a combination lock instead of a key lock for the locker. This reduces the risk of losing a key, which can add stress.

Locker Placement:

If possible, request a locker placement at the end of a row. This can provide more space and make it easier for your child to access their locker without feeling crowded or rushed.

Consider getting your child's locker placed near a responsible friend
This way, they can ask for help or support when needed, which can be comforting, especially during the first few weeks of high school.

Book Organisation

Colour-Coding System: Use different coloured folders or contact paper for each subject.
Label each folder clearly with the subject name on the front and spine. This makes it easier for your child to quickly grab the right materials between classes.

Visual checklist: Create a visual checklist for inside your child's locker with pictures of the items they need for each subject (e.g. Maths: red book, calculator, laptop and pencil case). This can help them quickly check they have everything before heading to class.

Time Table Management

Colour coding: Colour code the timetable to match the colour of the corresponding subject. You can even consider colour-code a map of the school to help your child navigate between classes more easily.

Visual Timetable: Create a large, colour-coded and visual timetable with symbols of subject to hang in your child's locker.

Digital Timetable: Consider using a digital timetable on your child's laptop, with reminders for upcoming classes and tasks.

Bag Organisation

Bag Tags: Attach a bag tag on the inside of your child's bag to match the materials they need to bring home each day.

Pack the Night Before: Encourage your child to pack their bag the night before school. This reduces morning stress and ensures they're not rushing or forgetting important items.

Bag clean out: Consider helping your child clean out their bag fortnightly to ensure it stays organised. Regular clean outs can prevent unnecessary clutter and help them keep track of important items.
